RUFF’S HYPOTHESIS - ‘Hominid Cylinder’
Utah Calcite
19 H x 7 W x 7 in.
Inspired by a soft, cylindrical plastic bedsheet container, this Utah Calcite sculpture reflects my fascination with everyday forms. I named it for Christopher Ruff of Johns Hopkins, who proposed that the human torso evolved as a "Hominid Cylinder"—a shape optimized for balance, strength, and movement. Its crinkled surface suggests both resilience and adaptability.
