Biography
For over four decades in the hills of California, dedicated sculptor T Barny has been carving away, making sophisticated artworks that range in size from one-foot-tall tabletop pieces to twelve-foot-tall corporate and public installations. Steel, stone, wood, and water have been shaped by his hand into curvilinear Mobius-inspired sculptures, of which his stone works are most celebrated
After obtaining his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1980, T Barny has worked as an artist-in-residence in Greece and Italy, as well as several locations throughout the U.S. The majority of his work is done from his home studio in Healdsburg, California, where the T Barny Gallery & Sculpture Gardens are also located. His works have been shown in over 100 galleries in 18 countries worldwide, and he has participated in more than 400 group and individual exhibitions.
When T Barny sources his stone for potential sculpture, he imports personally selected stone from quarries around the world, carving his pieces from massive blocks of granite, alabaster, calcite, and more, including his favorite, marble.
T Barny allows the natural rhythms of the stone he chooses to guide him to a final product. In making use of both the negative space and positive body of the stone, he carves directly on the stone to establish the ebb and flow of the piece, a refinement of the art that emerges from the stone by his hand. Abstraction and intuition are his models for the sculpture he creates. T Barny doesn’t simply sculpt; he releases the form from the stone in the way it is meant to take shape.
The “T” in T Barny is famously known to stand for “Touch”. When you grace a sculpture with your touch, you’ll find that his sculptures generate a kinetic illusion of movement and fluidity through his Mobius-like works, with a single, traceable, looping edge.
He aspires to create sculpture that reflects a world filled with magic and wonder, which celebrates the interrelated continuousness of all things.
