VIRIDIS – ‘Latin for green’
Argentine Onyx
This is one of the first sculptures I attempted to carve in this Argentine Onyx. We call this kind of grain or veining chaotic as opposed to the uniform parallel bedding plane of metamorphic marble. It is a banded variety of the oxide mineral chalcedony which is mostly silica with trigonal crystals. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.5. I am amazed how thin I can make this and how glass like this stone becomes.
