RAI - Utah Calcite

Rai, or “stone money” are large, circular disks carved out of limestone that were quarried on the Micronesian islands, mainly Palau, and transported to Yap for use as money. Rai stones are circular disks with a hole in the middle. A pole was put through the hole so laborers could carry the stone. The largest are 12 ft. and weigh 4 tons, the smallest are 3 in. and weigh a few ounces. The extrinsic (perceived) value of a specific Rai is based on its size, craftsmanship, and history. Rai stones were, and still are, used in important social transactions; marriage, inheritance, political deals, alliances, and ransom of the battle dead.
