T Barny is Super at Ellipsoids

Blog, GalleriesTBarny

The HOT, dry weather is here in Sonoma County and I am midway through my 2022 Savour Sculpture season. It has been wonderful having folks visit the studio and I had a ‘stellar’ show at Gallery North in Carmel in May.

I have been busy creating in my studio. Among my new pieces are a series of ‘Super Elipsoids’ in different colored stones. My fascination with the math of geometric shapes led me to a vision of a rounded sculpture with six sides. While my sculpture was not a pure geometric super ellipsoid it was the starting point.

Here are four examples of a T Barny Super Ellipsoid sculpture.

The super ellipsoid was proposed by the French mathematician and mechanician Gabriel Lamé in 1818. He took the form and grew it three dimensionally calling it a Lame curve which looks like this:

My Super Ellipsoid sculptures are the 3-d representation of 6 Lame curves which combine to create this unique form.

I started carving Super Ellipsoid sculptures in 2006 and have since completed 29 stone sculptures, 3 bronze sculptures and one giant foam sculpture.

Want to see my sculpture in person? Contact me for a free Studio tour. If you are in Santa Fe on August 12th, drop by my opening at Victory Contemporary from 5pm - 7pm.
